Where to stay in Darjeeling

Chowrasta and the Mall are Darjeeling's walkable centre, with Kanchenjunga views on clear mornings and mostly mid-to-premium hotels. Gandhi Road and the lower town, near the taxi and jeep stands, have the cheapest rooms. Jalapahar and the Observatory Hill area are quieter and more upscale, and the famous tea-estate bungalows sit well outside town at luxury prices.

Peak season is mid-March to May and October to early December, when the skies are clearest. The monsoon, June to September, brings landslide risk and is the cheapest, quietest time, and January–February is cold low season. A hotel that's a steep climb from the road can be hard work with luggage — check the approach before booking.

Darjeeling hotel FAQs

Which area of Darjeeling has the best mountain views?

Hotels around Chowrasta/the Mall and on Jalapahar ridge face Kanchenjunga; ask specifically for a north-facing or mountain-view room, as many rooms in the same hotel look the other way.

When are Darjeeling hotels cheapest?

The monsoon, June to September, and the cold January–February window. Mid-March to May and October–early December are peak season with the clearest views and highest rates.

Are Darjeeling tea-estate stays affordable?

The heritage estate bungalows (Glenburn, Makaibari and similar) are a luxury tier. For a tea-garden feel on a budget, look at guesthouses on the Happy Valley or Lebong side of town instead.
