Where to stay in Goa

North Goa — Calangute, Baga, Candolim, Anjuna and Vagator — is the busy, nightlife-heavy side with the widest choice of hotels, from beach hostels and guesthouses to mid-range resorts. South Goa — Colva, Benaulim, Palolem and Cavelossim — is quieter, greener and better for families and couples, with more premium beachfront resorts. Panjim's Latin Quarter (Fontainhas) suits heritage-stay seekers, while Old Goa and inland Ponda are the cheapest but a drive from the sand.

Rates spike sharply from mid-December to early January and again over Diwali and long weekends. The cheapest window is the monsoon, June to September, when many beach-shack hotels and 3-star properties drop rates well below their peak — October and February are also good value with dry weather. For Christmas–New Year travel, book at least 3–4 weeks ahead.

North Goa. It has more budget guesthouses and hostels packed close to the beaches, plus better transport, so it is cheaper to get around. South Goa's budget options are fewer and more spread out.
